산업화에 따른 경제발전과 더불어 현대의학이 발달함에 따라 사망률이 감소하고 인간의 평균수명이 연장됨에 따라 노인인구가 증가하게 되었다. 이러한 사회의 현대화는 반대로 노인들에게는 사회적, 심리적 고립과 소외라는 노인문제를 발생시키고 있다. 또한 산업화와 더불어 나타난 오늘날 전형적인 가족형태인 핵가족화로 인해 전통적 대가족제의 가장권이 약화되어 노인들의 입지는 더욱 좁아졌다.

사회는 사회의 각 부분들이 서로 통합되어 작동하는 역동적인 복합체이다. 이 복합체가 어떤 계기로 인하여 그 한 부분 혹은 부분들이 변화하게 될 때 그 외의 다른 부분에서도 이에 상응하는 상호연쇄적 적응변화가 발생한다. 이 상호연쇄적 적응변화의 과정에서 사회 체계의 부분들이 상호적응이 결여되거나 잘못 적응되어 사회의 각종제도가 본연의 목적에 의해 조직되지 못하고 해체되는 것을 해체적 사회문제라고 한다.
